Clumber Road Abundance project

The Abundance season is about to start again.
Clumber Road Stores on Clumber Road is now starting to get the new season herbs and vegetables from local gardens.

Today the first herbs: chives, mint, sage, and marjoram arrived.
Also: Rhurbarb and Spinach beet.

The food in the Abundance section is free, but if you are happy to leave a donation towards seeds and equipment, that would be very much appreciated.

Yesterday a made a simple but delicious soup with the spinach beet.
Handful of leaves (wash and take out the middle stalk), fry one onion and a garlic clove, add the leaves and a peeled potato. Then I added 1 pt of vegetable stock, brought to the boil and then simmered for 20 minutes. Added some milk and liquidized it. At the end I added some pieces of blue cheese (that I had left over in the fridge) Delicious!

Christmas on the Melton Road

On Saturday 15th December, local residents Jo Bennett, Tracey Slater and Louise Bullimore organised the Melton Road Christmas market.

The promise of live music, lovely food and gifts in addition to dry and not too cold weather got the good people of West Bridgford en masse.  They were introduced to some of the new shops like Heidi's home furnishings, Trio Juice bar and stalls that would not  normallly be on the Melton Road markets. (Having said that, they were so popular that they may be back in the new year)

On that day, 12 shop keepers launched their Calendar: Faces of the Melton Road, not only with some lovely pictures but also dates of events that will be happening in 2013.
This limited edition of calendars can be bought from

Melton Road Christmas Market in its third year

The popular Melton Road Christmas Market is taking place this year on Saturday 15th December from 10am.
All along the row of shops on Melton Road, there will be an array of festive activities, produce and gifts, as local businesses work together to create a community spirit.
Richard Naylor, from the Tall Frog Delicatessen and one of the organisers of the Market said, “We really enjoy getting together to put on this Christmas event and it gets better and better each year.”
Mulled wine and mince pies, Christmas Crafts and Carol singing, and Jolly Elves handing out balloons for the children are just some of the fun activities planned for this year’s market. You may even see Father Christmas serving behind one or two of the counters.
In its third year, this is a great event for all the family. With activities running from 10am – 2pm, be sure to pop along to see what’s going on.

Taste on Clumber Road had a Facelift

With help of the Rushcliffe Shop front grant, quality Farrow&Ball paint from Living HQ next door, a local joiner and painter, the shop front of Taste has been transformed. Still the wonderful warm atmosphere and quality food (I love their locally made fruit tartlets, which Jelena normally brings on a Friday, my husband really enjoys the fatless fruit cake) and tasty coffee.

Chris the new barrista, in his previous employment wanted to introduce recycling but the food chain he worked for was not able to incorporate this. When Chris told Mark the owner that his passion was to work somewhere that cares not just for themselves and customers but also the environment, Mark was all ears and set Chris the task to organise the recycling, reusing (most of the empty smoothie and juice bottles) go to local people who like making and preserving their own food and the size of the bottles are just right.
They now have starting composting their food waste using bokashi, this is then going to be used again  as a growing medium for some of their locally grown food.

Cans are crushed, paper and cardboard recycled,  jam jars and smoothie and juice bottles re used and Chris can be pleased that what he is so passionate about has been implemented by his new employer.
A great example of collaboration giving wonderful results.

Why not come and experience it for yourselves?

Organic Artisan Bread baked 'around the corner'

Jelena and husband Julian launched their new business Le Pain a la Main.
The now supply to, Tall Frog delicatessen and C. Brumpton the Butcher.

A FRUIT and veg shop in West Bridgford is to close after more than 60 years.

On Monday 13th February the Nottingham Evening Post wrote the following article:
Burton's Grocery Store in Melton Road will close on April 18.

The shop has been open since the end of the second world war.

Tony Burton, 63, has run it for the last 12 years.

He said he would be sad to see it go.

"It's been great, I've had fun doing it. My customers have been fantastic and I will be sad to leave them behind," he said.

"This shop has a long history of selling fruit and veg since the war, and I think the community will miss it."

The shop is frequented by Justice Secretary Ken Clarke and his wife.

Mr Burton, who said that he was not going to look for somewhere else to open, said: "Ken is just the same as anyone else when you get talking to him. I've always liked him, even though I may have different views from time to time.

"Basically I've been told the rents are going up by the landlords. I just know we won't be able to afford it to continue."

Customers Paul and Kate Lappage, who live just off Melton Road, said they had been coming to the shop for the past 12 years.

"It's a crying shame. Tony has been brilliant. He even gives me updates on Nottingham Forest; he gets all the gossip before the papers do," said Mr Lappage.

"You can ring up and order your groceries for Christmas or big occasions and it's much more personal than a big store. I will miss it greatly, and Tony has been fabulous," Mrs Lappage added.

Another customer Dorothy Gemmell of Manvers Road, West Bridgford, said Burton's was much more than just a grocery store.

"It's great, I have my Amazon books delivered here because he's always open and it's much closer than going to pick it up from the Post Office."

The shop is also part of West Bridgford's Totally Locally scheme – which aims to encourage people to buy locally and sustain the local economy.

Resident of Melton road Karina Wells said: "It's a massive loss. He has been a stalwart of the community and nearly everyone who lives in this area goes to him for their fruit and vegetables.

"He's also been a champion of our Totally Locally campaign. He was one of the first shops to get involved. It's because of him its tuned out to be such a success with more than 20 stores involved."

Paul Randle, deputy chief executive at Rushcliffe Borough Council, said: "Rushcliffe is generally a prosperous area with many thriving local businesses. The council has identified economic development as a priority for the forthcoming years and we are naturally disappointed to hear of the loss or difficulty of any local business."

Local Artist Helen Woodford has made this drawing of Tony's shop to present to him as a farewell present. A card and donation box is currently located in the Tall Frog.

New Local Organic Wine supplier to the Melton Road

Today Kiran of Clumber Road stores and myself went to visit Ruth and John Daltry at their vineyard in South Kilworth,Leicestershire. Contrary to the weather forecast we had lovely sunshine whilst we were looking around. John and Ruth planted their first vines in 1973. They are certified organic and grow vegetables for their local box scheme as well.

After that we went into the area where the processing happens in autumn time. We saw huge crushers, vats and bottle sterilisers,

John also showed us how they put the corks on and explained that although they have 7 regular people help out, during the harvesting time, they need all hands on deck and many people come and give them a hand. If you are interested in how a good organic English wine tastes, why not come to the wine tasting at on Easter Saturday Market at Clumber Road off license and if you fancy visiting the vineyard you only need to contact John and Ruth and they will no doubt give you a warm welcome.

Introducing to you some local suppliers to the Melton Road shops

Le Pain a la Main
Introducing our Totally local bakery, based only around the corner of Melton Road.
Jelena has been baking bread ever since her grandmother taught her over 30 years ago. Since that time, she has attended bread making courses at the prestigious School of Artisan Food on the Wellbeck Estate near to Worksop, Nottinghamshire. Le pain à la main is a new bakery producing artisan breads and pâtisseries from scratch using authentic ingredients. We deliver to West Bridgford and around Nottingham.

The business supplies local delicatessens, cafes, restaurants and independent stores in the West Bridgford and Nottingham area. The bread is baked every morning (very early) and delivered fresh and hot to our clients.

We only use four ingredients in our bread, these being: organic flour, yeast, salt and water.

Our bread has absolutely nothing else added to it and is made following traditional artisanal methods.

We offer four types of bread currently. White loaves, wholemeal loaves, Pain de Campagne Sourdough and Malthouse / Granary loaves.

Jelena and Julian will be supplying to The Tall Frog, and C Brumpton the butchers.

Launching the Bridgford Instant Gardening Project (BIG project)
On 3rd March 3 local projects will come together to facilitate quick and easy vegetable growing in West Bridgford.

Ark Solutions,a local manufacture of (collapsible and easy to store) chicken, rabbit and guinea pig runs has joined the project and is also selling flat pack square foot gardens (4ft x 4ft).

If residents want local facilities, whether it be shops, pubs (a subject dear to our hearts!), libraries, whatever, they need to use them as a matter of habit and not just when they run out of milk on sunday afternoon. In turn the shopkeepers need to look at sourcing of their products and go for properly (and preferably locally) produced goods for sale, so as to give themselves an edge over the supermarkets. We are proud to only use British grown malt and hops - most brewers use hops from half way round the world - and that we brew, cask and bottle all our beers locally.

Bob Douglas
Magpie Brewery

SoSmoothies

One day in the school holidays, local teenager Ben Nichols was bored and created 2 flavors of fruit smoothie (strawberries & Banana and Pineapple & Mango). He then thought it would be a great business so of he went and designed some labels and created the brand "SoSmoothies". (This was not a typical day off school!).
The business started to grow when he asked the local shops if they would take some off him on a sale or return. This proved a sound strategy as sales figures are growing rapidly.
He is really enjoying SoSmoothies and hopes one day that they could end up on supermarket shelves.
So if you see a SoSmoothie in a shop or at a market, then for smoothies sake pick it up!

if you have any question or want ot stock SoSmoothies please email him

Harrington's Handmade Fudge -

I love Fudge! When I was just 10 years old my friend came into school with some fudge her mum had made for her at home - I thought it was the most amazing thing I had ever tasted, much nicer than the shop bought fudge. I begged her to give me the recipe but she didn't know how her mum had made it.

Time went by and my love affair with fudge continued into adulthood, I decided to try and make it myself - it couldn't be that difficult! Well it turned out to be quite tricky, it was too hard, it was too soft but after lots of experiments and lots of wasted ingredients I managed to get the balance right and produced what can only be described as the most delicious fudge you will ever taste! I got busy devising recipes and now have a really wide range of delicious flavours: Heavenly Dairy, Chocolate Indulgence, Chocolate Hazelnut, White Chocolate, Scottish Tablet, Baileys Fudge, to name but a few!

I buy really good quality ingredients most of which are sourced locally in independent shops in West Bridgford, and take a lot of pride in making the tastiest fudge I can. Every batch of fudge is taste tested for it's quality - there is never a lack of volunteers for that job!
Hayley and Gayle of 'Harrington's Handmade Fudge' will be in front of the Tall Frog, introducing their wonderfully locally handmade fudge. Harrington Handmade Fudge

We had a fantastic time doing each others make up and learning how to do that properly. Alana has done make up for lots of top names in show business, she also does make up for brides on their big day. Alana is based at 85 Melton Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham.
I would definitely recommend her to anyone who loves make up or feeling relaxed or just wants to try something new"
